Krzysztof Dowgiałło (ur. 1938, Nowomalin) pochodzi z rodziny ziemiańskiej (herbu Zadora). We wrześniu 1939 jako roczne dziecko z matką, siostrą i trzema braćmi uciekł z rodzinnego majątku przed wkraczającymi na Wołyń wojskami radzieckimi, a jego ojciec został rozstrzelany w Kijowie. Okupację spędził w zaprzyjaźnionych majątkach w Generalnej Guberni. Podczas powstania warszawskiego stracił matkę i brata, po wojnie wychowywany był przez dalszą rodzinę, osiadłą po wojnie w Trójmieście. Skończył architekturę na Politechnice Gdańskiej i wyjechał na Zachód, m.in do Londynu (gdzie pracował w pracowni słynnego Denysa Lasduna), Paryża i Algierii. Po powrocie zatrudniony w gdańskim Miastoprojekcie. W grudniu 1970 r. uczestniczył w krwawych protestach robotników w Gdyni, pod wpływem których napisał „Balladę o Janku Wiśniewskim”. Od 1980 r. związany z „Solidarnością”, współorganizator strajku w Miastoprojekcie, gdzie został przewodniczącym komisji zakładowej. W stanie wojennym skazany na cztery lata więzienia, z czego odsiedział dwa lata w Potulicach. W czerwcu 1984 r. został ponownie aresztowany, zwolniony po miesiącu na mocy amnestii. W latach 1989-91 był posłem na sejm z listy Komitetu Obywatelskiego „Solidarność”.

[00:00:15] Ur. w czerwcu 1938 r. w Nowomalinie na Wołyniu, w majątku babki ze strony ojca. Matka pochodziła z Obór pod Warszawą, ojciec z Siesik koło Wiłkomierza na Litwie. Był tam średniowieczny zameczek nad jeziorem, gdzie mieszali dziadkowie. Rodzina ziemiańska herbu Zadora.
[00:02:40] Po rozpoczęciu wojny – zajęcie majątku przez bolszewików, aresztowanie ojca. Matka z piątką dzieci wyruszyła do Polski. Ojciec [Karol Dowgiałło] zamordowany [przez bolszewików] i pochowany na cmentarzu pod Kijowem.
[00:05:10] Matka przez Lwów dotarła na Podlasie do Generalnej Guberni, zatrzymali się w majątku krewnych. Udało jej się przejść, bo była urodzona w Rydze. Rodzeństwo: najstarsza Zofia (starsza o ok. 18 lat), Dominik, Andrzej, Jan, boh. najmłodszy. W tym majątku schroniło się wielu krewnych z Kresów.
[00:08:43] Przenosiny do wuja w Oborach, pozostałe dzieci zostały rozlokowane u różnych krewnych w Polsce. Opiekunka Karolia Pawęska. Młodzież z okolicznych majątków grała popołudniami w piłkę w pobliskim parku – większość potem zginęła w powstaniu warszawskim.
[00:11:05] Przeprowadzka do majątku ciotki – wozem przez podwarszawskie miasteczka, nad głową latały samoloty, bombardowania [+]. Ucieczka Niemców przed Rosjanami – chowali się po piwnicach, rozjeżdżano ich samochodami. Rosjanie w majątku, przyjazne stosunki z dziewczętami. Ciotki kręciły papierosy, brat Jan je sprzedawał, kupował za to żywność, raz z trudem uszedł z życiem przed Rosjaninem.
[00:15:10] Partyzanci przychodzili nocą, w łóżeczku boh. trzymali broń. [+]. Brat Dominik zastrzelony przez patrol niemiecki pierwszego dnia powstania (18 lat). Siostra Zofia (zwana Zulą) walczyła w powstaniu, trafiła do stalagu w Dolinie Kłodzkiej, wyzwolona przez Rosjan, w listopadzie [1944] dotarła do rodziny, spotkanie z matką.
[00:19:28] Pozostałe rodzeństwo przeżyło wojnę na południu Polski. Matka w przeddzień powstania pojechała do Warszawy zaopiekować się ciotką mieszkającą w okolicy Sejmu – własowcy znaleźli je w piwnicy, zastrzelili ciotkę, matkę pognano na „Zieleniak” na Ochocie, prawdopodobnie została zastrzelona na Woli. Rodzeństwem zaopiekowała się siostra ojca z mężem: zamieszkanie w Bytowie na Pomorzu, przeprowadzka do Sopotu. Brat Andrzej wstąpił do seminarium duchownego, Zofia zamieszkała w Warszawie.
[00:23:00] Wujostwo byli na cenzurowanym jako dawni ziemianie, kłopoty lokalowe. „Afera Maręża”. Ziemianie z kresów osiedlali się w poniemieckich majątkach – „Marenż” [Piotr Meringe] skazany na śmierć. Wuj Dymitr Korybut Daszkiewicz pochodził z Kresów (obecnie Białoruś), po wojnie zatrudnił się jako księgowy w urzędzie, ciotka uczyła angielskiego. Spotkania z innymi ziemianami osiadłymi na Pomorzu.
[00:26:42] Szkoła w Sopocie, liceum, studia na politechnice, wydział architektury. Brat studiował chemię, musiał się przenieść do Poznania, bo prowadzący zajęcia wojskowe dowódca Grzenia-Romanowski odkrył jego ziemiańskie pochodzenie – na „zebraniu żołnierskim” koledzy stwierdzili, że „nie chcą mieć inteligenta w plutonie”, kolega spoliczkowany przez boh. pepegiem.
[00:30:44] Kolega Edek Jurewicz zachęcał do entuzjazmu wobec Gomułki. Boh. nie zajmował się polityką. Przemianowywanie nazw ulic (3 Maja, zamiast Rokossowskiego – ul. Monte Cassino.
[00:33:38] Przed zamieszkaniem w Sopocie pobyt w Witaszycach. Baronowa Ohnesorge – wspomnienie jej spotkania z rozkradającymi majątek Rosjanam: „ja stara, chora i to wszystko moje”.
[00:36:44] Brat Andrzej wstąpił do seminarium, po 2 latach musiał się leczyć na gruźlicę, skończył studia we Wrocławiu. Brat Jan też mieszkał we Wrocławiu u historyka i bibliofila Aftanazego, znajomego rodziców. Andrzej zrobił doktorat z chemii, Jan jest profesorem geologii, po 1989 r. był ambasadorem w Izraelu. Zula wyszła za Stanisława Jabłonowskiego.
[00:41:21] Kłopoty ze znalezieniem pracy po studiach, przeprowadzka do Warszawy – praca na budowie, potem w biurze projektów służby zdrowia. Ciotka Idalia Krzeczunowicz wyjechała na początku wojny do Londynu – zaprosiła tam boh. Smog nad Londynem, policjant szedł przed autobusem i wskazywał drogę. Praca przez dwa lata w biurze projektów u Denysa Lasduna, wyjazd do Francji, a potem do Algierii, gdzie tworzył biuro architektoniczne. Szkoła wieczorowa w Londynie. [+]
[00:46:45] Ben Bella, przywódca Algierii, uzależnił kraj od ZSRR. Groty koło Oranu, przewrót pułkownika Bumediena („Bumedien na latarnie!”), walki uliczne w Algierze. Praca: założenia urbanistyczne różnych miast, projektowanie.
[00:50:40] Próba przedłużenia paszportu, konsul Bilik. Kabylowie, przedmuzułmańscy mieszkańcy gór Djurdjura, wędrówki po górach porośniętych cedrami, spotkanie wysiadującej jaja orlicy. Zatrzymanie przez policję.
[00:56:07] Koniec ważności paszportu, powrót do Polski. Marzec 1968 w Gdańsku, wiece i bójki pod gmachem Politechniki Gdańskiej, potyczki z milicją.
[00:59:28] Boh. pracował w Gdyni w filii Miastoprojektu. Grudzień 1970. Zatrzymanie kolejki na Wzgórzu Nowotki (dziś św. Maksymiliana) – walki policji z tłumem ludzi, pochód niosący zabitego chłopca w stronę budynku Urzędu Miasta. Rzucanie węglem w zomowców.
[01:02:50] Po powrocie do domu boh. napisał „Balladę o Janku Wiśniewskim” w odruchu protestu, śpiewana przez Mieczysława Cholewę.
[01:08:43] Następnego dnia boh. rozdał kilka egzemplarzy „Ballady”, przepisała je sekretarka. Festiwal Piosenki Prawdziwej w 1980 r.
[01:11:25] Zaangażowanie w działalność opozycyjną po Sierniu 1980 – założenie komitetu strajkowego w Miastoprojekcie, wyjazd do Stoczni Gdańskiej. Zgromadzeni w sali BHP, w mniejszej sali rozmawiał Andrzej Gwiazda. Ze strony rządu: Jagielski. Wielkie uniesienie. Ksiądz Jankowski odprawiał msze. Tłum pod stocznią.
[01:15:36] Redagowanie pisma w Miastoprojekcie, zaangażowanie w „S”, „praca od podstaw”, atmosfera współpracy. „Ballada o Janku Wiśniewskim” stawała się coraz bardziej popularna po Festiwalu Piosenki Prawdziwej.

[01:52:20] Strajki w 1988 r. w stoczni – gra w piłkę z zomowcami. Była już inna atmosfera, nikt się nie bał. Wejście do stoczni przez gazownię z braćmi Kaczyńskimi i ministrantem.
[01:56:24] Start w wyborach do sejmu „kontraktowego”. Rozpad Klubu Obywatelskiego, antysemickie zachowania w klubie. Po reformie Balcerowicza zostało w Polsce wiele żalu z powodu ubóstwa. Zaangażowanie w działalność polityczną (poseł), lokalną (radny), społeczną (wiceprzewodniczący Światowej Organizacji Pracy).

Ever since it was established, the Witold Pilecki Institute of Solidarity and Valor has been collecting and sharing documents that present the multiple historical facets of the last century. Many of them were previously split up, lost, or forgotten. Some were held in archives on other continents. To facilitate research, we have created an innovative digital archive that enables easy access to the source material. We are striving to gather as many archives as possible in one place. As a result, it takes little more than a few clicks to learn about the history of Poland and its citizens in the 20th century.
The Institute’s website contains a description of the collections available in the reading room as well as the necessary information to plan a visit. The documents themselves are only available in the Institute’s reading room, a public space where material is available free of charge to researchers and anyone interested in the topics collected there. The reading room also offers a friendly environment for quiet work.
The materials are obtained from institutions, public archives, both domestic and international social organizations, as well as from private individuals. The collections are constantly being expanded. A full-text search engine that searches both the content of the documents and their metadata allows the user to reach the desired source with ease. Another way to navigate the accumulated resources is to search according to the archival institutions from which they originate and which contain hierarchically arranged fonds and files.
Most of the archival materials are in open access on computers in the reading room. Some of our collections, e.g. from the Bundesarchiv, are subject to the restrictions on availability resulting from agreements between the Institute and the institutions which transfer them. An appropriate declaration must be signed upon arrival at the reading room in order to gain immediate access to these documents.
Before your visit, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the scope and structure of our archival, library and audio-visual resources, as well as with the regulations for visiting and using the collections.
All those wishing to access our collections are invited to the Pilecki Institute at ul. Stawki 2 in Warsaw. The reading room is open from 9–15, Monday to Friday. An appointment must be made in advance by emailing czytelnia@instytutpileckiego.pl or calling (+48) 22 182 24 75.
