Maria Maziarska (ur. 1934, Łukowa) po wysiedleniu wsi Łukowa trafiła wraz z rodziną do obozu koncentracyjnego na Majdanku. Po osiemnastu miesiącach doczekali wyzwolenia, ale wkrótce potem zmarł ojciec Andrzej Gaca. Maria z matką i dwoma braćmi powróciła do Łukowej.
[00:00:08] Ur. 5 października 1934 r. w Łukowej, pow. Biłgoraj, woj. lubelskie. Początek wojny, pierwsze naloty – dwie siostry zginęły od wybuchu bomby tuż przed domem. Liczne łapanki w czasie wojny na wywózki do Niemiec. Dwaj Niemcy wjechali do wsi na motorze, wyciągnęli mężczyzn z kryjówki w piwnicy na podwórku sąsiadów Początek wysiedleń do Majdanka 7 czerwca 1943 r. W Łukowej mieszkało pięć żydowskich rodzin, matka z dzieckiem na ręku zastrzelona przez Niemców na oczach boh. [+]
[00:03:45] Biłgoraj należał do ZSRR, Zamość do III Rzeszy. Liczni sąsiedzi Ukraińcy. Rodzice nie mieli ziemi, ojciec był stolarzem. „Krowa żywicielka rodziny”, na przednówku wiosną 1942 r. panował głód, „jedliśmy ser i popijaliśmy mlekiem”. Wydany przez Niemców zakaz indywidualnego mielenia ziarna na mąkę.
[00:06:00] W gminie stacjonowali Niemcy, organizowali młodych Polaków na roboty do Niemiec. Brat przyrodni przetrwał wojnę na robotach „i dobrze zrobił”. I Komunia boh. w czasie wojny. Pozostawiony w domu chleb upieczony przez mamę w dniu wysiedlenia, rodzina wygnana z domu bez jakiegokolwiek bagażu. Nocleg wypędzonych w majątku w Chmielku, następnego dnia wywiezienie samochodami do Majdanka: ukwiecona brama, orkiestra powitalna. Łaźnia z krematorium obok. [+]
[00:08:35] Przywiezienie do obozu Żydów, zgromadzenie na placu apelowym. Baraki bez okien. Zupa z liści buraczanych dla Polaków, Żydzi nie otrzymali jedzenia. Apel o godz. 6 rano, ojciec wynoszony na noszach z powodu choroby, w tym czasie odgłosy rozstrzeliwania Żydów. „Sterty Żydów” widziane przez dziurę w płocie latryny. „jeszcze się niektórzy ruszali”. Palenie ciał Żydów w krematorium.
[00:10:33] Wyzwolenie Majdanka. W czasie okupacji Niemcy spędzili wszystkich mieszkańców kolonii Szarajówka do stodoły i spalili żywcem. Cmentarz partyzancki w Osuchach. Z powodu wygłodzenia boh. trafiła do szpitala, ojciec nie przeżył. Boh została z mamą i dwoma braćmi (ur. 1937 i 1940 r.).
[00:12:05] Zorganizowana [powojenna] akcja odżywiania [więźniów Majdanka] – co tydzień u innego gospodarza. Przewiezienie rodziny do Biłgoraju. Pobyt u wuja w Biłgoraju, jesienią przyjazd do domu rodzinnego. Opustoszały dom, zabrane wszystkie sprzęty, wykopana w ogrodzie beczka z ubraniami. Cała wieś zasiedlona przez Ukraińców: „sołtys ukraiński, szkoła ukraińska”. Odzyskiwanie dobytku przez mamę: „krowę poznała, kury poznała”. Opuszczenie wsi przez Ukraińców przed powracającymi z obozu Polakami. Trudna zima bez jakichkolwiek środków do życia. Wiosną [1945] boh. zatrudniła się u gospodarza, by paść krowy. Poprawne stosunki z sąsiadami Ukraińcami na początku okupacji niemieckiej.
[00:15:35] Kuzyn ojca z rodziną rozstrzelany na podwórku swojego domu „w czwartek”. Opis sytuacji. Młody sąsiad zabity „w biały dzień”, rozstrzelanie rodziny Gałków.
[00:22:10] Niejasność, niepewność ludzi podczas wysiedlenia. Po wojnie „za Gomułki” nakaz przyjęcia polskiego obywatelstwa przez Ukraińców lub wyjazdu do Ukraińskiej SRR.
[00:24:10] W czasie wysiedlenia starsze i schorowane osoby zostały we wsi pod opieką osiedleńców ukraińskich. W 1981 r. wizyta boh. z rodziną w Majdanku. W czasie okupacji obóz otoczono drutem pod napięciem, strażnicy wkoło. Opis pierwszej kąpieli w łaźni, przydział pasiaków. Piętrowe prycze w barakach, prycza na rodzinę. Cała rodzina była razem, spała na jednej pryczy. Zachorowanie brata na zapalenie ucha.
[00:28:30] Marne wyżywienie w obozie, w czwartki dawano ćwiartkę chleba, czarna kawa, zupy z liści buraków.
[00:30:10] Ojciec został postrzelony w nogę przez polowego pilnującego pól dziedzica. Stale jątrząca się rana w obozie uniemożliwiająca chodzenie. „Codziennie ludzie umierali”. Zabranie ojca do szpitala zaraz po wyzwoleniu obozu, śmierć zaraz po tym. Dwoje dzieci ojca (syn i córka) z pierwszego małżeństwa: w czasie wysiedlenia córka została w majątku dziedzica, brat wyjechał do Niemiec na roboty, wrócił i osiadł w Zdrojach pod Szczecinem.
[00:34:50] Uciążliwe apele w obozie na placu, przemoc wobec więźniów. Baraki ryglowane na noc, wiadro do załatwiania się w nocy.

[00:38:10] Wyzwolenie Majdanka przez wojsko polskie. Smutna rzeczywistość obozu, „tylko ten barak i tyle”.
[00:41:40] Przewiezienie wyzwolonych więźniów do Lublina, zakwaterowanie rodziny w pokoju u gospodarza w Bełżycach. Odżywianie przez miesiąc, po czym przejazd do wuja k. Biłgoraju, a po kilku dniach do domu podwodą wyznaczoną przez sołtysa.
[00:44:00] Dramatyczne początki po powrocie z obozu, dojmująca bieda. Zdobywanie żywności przez mamę ‒ praca za żywność. Po pewnym czasie wydzierżawienie kawałka pola, własne uprawy, „krowa żywicielka rodziny”. „Chodziliśmy boso”.
[00:46:11] Konieczność zarobkowania przez dzieci „na służbie” kosztem edukacji. Ciotka mieszkająca w Osuchach złapana na roboty do Niemiec. Dwunastu partyzantów z Osuch zastrzelonych przez Niemców. Po wojnie boh. pracowała, pasąc krowy i ucząc się.
[00:49:30] Po szkole ukończone kursy doszkalające, praca w Szczecinie jako konduktorka w tramwaju. Brutalne porachunki partyzantów po wojnie. Młody sąsiad, wielbiciel siostry boh., zastrzelony w biały dzień na wygonie. Jego ojciec zginął „za kontyngent” w czasie wojny.

Ever since it was established, the Witold Pilecki Institute of Solidarity and Valor has been collecting and sharing documents that present the multiple historical facets of the last century. Many of them were previously split up, lost, or forgotten. Some were held in archives on other continents. To facilitate research, we have created an innovative digital archive that enables easy access to the source material. We are striving to gather as many archives as possible in one place. As a result, it takes little more than a few clicks to learn about the history of Poland and its citizens in the 20th century.
The Institute’s website contains a description of the collections available in the reading room as well as the necessary information to plan a visit. The documents themselves are only available in the Institute’s reading room, a public space where material is available free of charge to researchers and anyone interested in the topics collected there. The reading room also offers a friendly environment for quiet work.
The materials are obtained from institutions, public archives, both domestic and international social organizations, as well as from private individuals. The collections are constantly being expanded. A full-text search engine that searches both the content of the documents and their metadata allows the user to reach the desired source with ease. Another way to navigate the accumulated resources is to search according to the archival institutions from which they originate and which contain hierarchically arranged fonds and files.
Most of the archival materials are in open access on computers in the reading room. Some of our collections, e.g. from the Bundesarchiv, are subject to the restrictions on availability resulting from agreements between the Institute and the institutions which transfer them. An appropriate declaration must be signed upon arrival at the reading room in order to gain immediate access to these documents.
Before your visit, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the scope and structure of our archival, library and audio-visual resources, as well as with the regulations for visiting and using the collections.
All those wishing to access our collections are invited to the Pilecki Institute at ul. Stawki 2 in Warsaw. The reading room is open from 9–15, Monday to Friday. An appointment must be made in advance by emailing czytelnia@instytutpileckiego.pl or calling (+48) 22 182 24 75.
